Considered a rite of passage, having your wisdom teeth removed is something nearly everyone goes through in their life. Why is that the case? Wisdom teeth, or third molars, often cause significant issues due to evolutionary changes in the human jaw. Over time, human jaws have become smaller, yet we still develop the same number of teeth.
This discrepancy can lead to overcrowding, impaction, and infection, as there simply isn’t enough room for these additional molars to emerge properly. As a result, many people experience pain, swelling, and other complications when their wisdom teeth begin to erupt.
Your dentist will take X-rays to determine the position of your wisdom teeth. They’ll discuss the procedure with you, including sedation options, to ensure you’re comfortable. At Hawthorn Dental Hub, wisdom teeth can often be removed in-chair under local anaesthetic, making the procedure relatively straightforward and comfortable. During your consultation, we will assess whether your case requires a specialist referral.
The dentist will make an incision in your gums, remove any bone blocking access to the tooth root, and then extract the tooth or teeth.
Recovery typically takes a few days to a week. Common post-operative experiences include swelling and mild discomfort, which are normal and can be managed with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medications. Some bleeding is expected on the first day, which can be controlled by gently biting on gauze pads. It’s important to stick to soft foods and avoid using straws to prevent dislodging the blood clot that forms in the socket. To maintain oral hygiene, gently rinse with salt water after 24 hours and avoid vigorous rinsing or brushing near the extraction site.
